Nonadiabatic dynamics of dark solitons

چکیده
We show that under certain conditions the dark soliton solutions of the defocusing nonlinear Schrr odinger equation can be less stable than their bright counterparts. This is due to the tendency of a dark soliton under external perturbation to generate dispersive waves that organize themselves in a \shelf" around the pulse wings, as exempliied by the simple case of dark solitons under small linear damping or ampliication. The shelf generation is a non-adiabatic process: the shelf area is of order unity after a propagation distance which scales like the inverse of the perturbation magnitude. This is in contrast with the bright soliton dynamics under similar circumstances. We analyze the impact of this extra source of dispersive waves on possible dark soliton-based long distance communication systems. We nd that the second order (in the normalized ampliier spacing) perturbation resulting from averagingg18, 19] does not lead to shelf formation, while a control devicee20] in general causes it, unless the controller parameters are chosen according to a simple criterion aimed at suppressing dispersive wave generation. We illustrate the eeectiveness of this criterion with extensive numerical simulations.

Dynamics of coupled dark and bright optical solitons.
We theoretically examine the interaction between two solitons in a double-mode optical fiber. The bound state between two solitons of different modes is investigated, including both dark and bright solitons. It is shown that interaction between dark solitons as well as between bright solitons is always attractive, but the interaction between bright and dark solitons may be repulsive. Analytical...

: Optical separate spatial dark and bright soliton pairs in steady-state case in one dimension, for a series circuit consisting of two-photon photorefractive (PR) crystal are investigated. Each crystal can be supported the spatial soliton, and at least one must be photovoltaic. The two solitons are known collectively as separate spatial soliton pairs with dark–dark, bright–dark and bright–brigh...
متن کاملDark Optical Solitons: Physics and Applications
We present a detailed overview of the physics and applications of optical dark solitons: localized nonlinear waves (or ‘holes’) existing on a stable continuous wave (or extended finite-width) background. Together with the traditional problems involving properties of dark solitons of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we also describe recent theoretical results on optical vorte...
متن کاملPolarized dark solitons in isotropic Kerr media
We characterize dark-type vector optical solitons of arbitrary polarization in isotropic, Kerr-type media by applying Hirota’s method to the integrable Manakov model with a defocusing nonlinearity. We find that nonuniformly polarized solitons comprise a rich solution family that can be divided into two categories: dark-dark and dark-bright vector solitons. We consider the propagation dynamics a...
متن کاملInstability-induced dynamics of dark solitons.
Nonlinear theory describing the instability-induced dynamics of dark solitons in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is presented. Equations for the evolution of an unstable dark soliton, including its transformation into a stable soliton, are derived using a multiscale asymptotic technique valid near the soliton instability threshold. Results of the asymptotic theory are applied to ...
